HONOLULU — A Maui woman designed a baby carrier for her son and created a highly successful business around it.Karin Frost sold her business, Ergo Baby, for $91 million last year.Six months after the upcountry mom made millions, she was back in the office still feeling on top of the world.”I feel really exhilarated, but I have to say it is not just me. it is a whole team around the world that has made it what it is and it’s the parents around the world who have been looking something different,” Frost said.Frost created a body-friendly baby carrier that would allow her to keep her son close even past the toddler years.”The other carriers just weren’t working for me and that was the need for me was bridging the gap,” Frost said.Frost was clever enough to turn her frustration into a commercial success.when KITV4′s cameras went looking for someone who used an Ergo Baby carrier, we didn’t have to go far. every single mother in as Kaimuki Gymboree play class owned one.”I have tried a number of different carriers and this is definitely my favorite,” Ergo Baby user Alice Iida said.”Early on we continue to get emails and testimonials and cards saying ‘You’ve change my life and saved my marriage and saved my job’ and that’s what drove me for sure to keep going,” Frost said.Armed with a design degree, Frost said her journey wasn’t without hurdles. Frost recalled a turning point when a crisis with a manufacturer over knockoff designs.rather than litigate, Frost chose to innovate, and create a whole new line.”It made a complete hit and splash, and our sales went through the roof and we couldn’t keep things in stock,” Frost said.”I would say I feel a lot of the success of the company is this new parenting paradigm I like to call it, where parents are becoming more aware to bond with their babies and really be there to facilitate their needs when they need them,” she said.while Frost could retire, she plans to keep her hand in the business taking Ergo Baby to another level helping moms along the way.she sold 84 percent stake to Compass Diversified Holdings, but intends to stay involved developing new products.”We will be analyzing the market, and we have done a lot of pulling in data in the child and infant industry, and we will be looking at where there is a niche that needs to be filled,” Frost said.now that she is in a financial position to do so much good, she started a family foundation.Moms who learned of Frost’s success story said they feel empowered and at the same time grateful for a product that meets their needs.”It is so inspiring. and it is amazing. it is so comfortable easy to use, and my baby loves it,” Iida said.Frost built a brand and is now poised to expand. Parenting Magazine named the Ergo Baby carrier one of the best 20 products in the lasts two decades.it is a top seller in Japan and Europe. however, it is not without copy cats. Ergo Baby’s website cautions buyers to be careful of counterfeits available over the Internet.
