About 20 testy residents from the northeast side of Glen Ellyn showed up at the Village Civic Center Tuesday to let ComEd officials know how they feel about repeated power outages in the area.
“We are a very frustrated, disappointed and even angry group of people,” Ken Trantowski, spokesman for the group, told ComEd officials. “The power has not been dependable.”
Those affected live along Crescent Boulevard, primarily from Riford Road to all the way past Clifton Avenue.
Trantowski said the residents understand power outages could happen, but stressed that outages kept occurring under normal weather conditions.
“Residents were made to feel the outages were isolated … not true,” he said.
Trantowski also said that some ComEd maintenance employees told residents that the problems were too expensive to fix and suggested that residents buy a generator, which some did.
“We do appreciate the frustration and apologize up front (for poor customer service),” ComEd External Affairs Manager John O’Halloran told the group.
He noted that tree branches cause many outages, including trees damaged by storms and those needing to be trimmed.
Residents minced no words in expressing their unhappiness with a situation that, for some, has meant going as long as five days without power.
“I don’t think we care about that,” Paul Williams told the officials after O’Halloran gave a presentation on the various infrastructure in the area. “We just want to know why we don’t have power.”
Williams noted that Glen Ellyn streets had undergone serious renovation in recent years and that cables should have been installed then.
“You should be underground,” he said.
ComEd Reliability Manager Jeff Dominick said there were disadvantages to using underground cables, noting that with overhead wires it was easier to spot one that was down.
One man claimed he heard that when power was out for three days several years ago, ComEd left the area because of a dispute with the village over who was responsible for trimming the trees in the area.
Asked why this particular part of Glen Ellyn had these repeated outages, Dominick was non-committal.
“It’s nothing specific,” he said, stressing that downed trees and at least one vehicle accident were the causes of recent outages.
“Five years of anomalies,” Trantowski shot back.
Dominick said there were plans for spot tree trimming and additional fusing to further sectionalize outages in late 2011. “Going out and trimming the trees,” he said. “That’s the important thing.”
The meeting broke up early when tornado warnings forced the evacuation of the second floor. Interim Glen Ellyn Public Works Manager Jeff Perrigo said the village would “continue its conversation with ComEd,” and said he had no knowledge of disputes over tree-trimming responsibilities that occurred long before he was in his current job.
Donna Neill didn’t seem satisfied. “I’m happy they heard the message,” she said. “The public wants more accountability, especially when they raise their rates.”
Neill also didn’t buy what she thinks is an excuse about downed trees as the cause of the problem. “Everybody has trees,” she said.
