The Detroit Tigers lost Victor Martinez. the Detroit Tigers added Prince Fielder. Terrific! And so simple. see, Martinez was a DH, so Fielder could just come and DH, and it’s all really easy, at least for a year until Martinez comes back.
It won’t be that easy. Here’s the situation for now, according to Jason Beck:
Sounds like #Tigers will have a rotation going at corner infield spots, including Cabrera playing 3rd base on some days.
The Tigers have Prince Fielder locked up for a while. He’s a first baseman. the Tigers have Miguel Cabrera locked up for a while. He’s a first baseman. the Tigers have Brandon Inge locked up. He’s a third baseman. There’s also Don Kelly, who might factor somehow, and Delmon Young should probably be a DH, and…
It’s honestly not that complicated, when you realize that Fielder and Cabrera are going to play every day. They’re Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera. the Tigers will find room. but Cabrera will get time at the hot corner, and you’ll want to pay close attention to how he does, since Martinez is under contract through 2014. a smooth adjustment would be a lot nicer than a less smooth and probable adjustment.
As a teenager, Miguel Cabrera used to be a shortstop. they pretty much all used to be shortstops. That always tickles me.
With Prince Fielder, Just What Is The Tigers’ Defensive Plan?

Vice President Joe Biden was forced to shorten his appearance at a Nevada high school Thursday when the smell of smoke from a nearby wildfire filled the gymnasium where he was speaking.
Poor weather conditions had already delayed Biden’s visit to Galena High School in Reno, Nev., by more than two hours, according to the Associated Press. the vice president’s flight was diverted to Fallon, Nev., which is approximately 60 miles away from Reno, due to high winds.
according to a White House press release, the vice president was scheduled to speak about college affordability as “part of a continuing national dialogue on the issue.” Average tuition and fees at a four-year public university have tripled since current high school seniors were born, the press release said.
Biden was originally scheduled to arrive at 11:30 a.m. but his speech on education costs didn’t end up starting until 1:45 p.m.
Twenty-five minutes into the speech, Biden was told to wrap up his remarks due to the nearby wildfire, the AP reported. after taking 15 minutes of questions, Biden finished by telling the students to “challenge authority” and attend college.
More than 10,000 people were evacuated due to the wildfire, which caused at least one confirmed death, according to the local NBC affiliate.
“We’re very disappointed,” a spokeswoman for Washoe County School District told the AP. “All the students and the parents have been looking forward to this, but it’s Mother Nature, and we can’t control that.”

In an absolutely stunning move, the Detroit Tigers have inked Prince Fielder to a 9-year, $214M contract. this signing has literally blown the doors off of a fairly quiet offseason. Nobody saw this coming, well almost nobody.
Fielder instantly becomes the highest paid Tiger on the roster at an average annual salary of $23.778M/year. Fielder’s addition raises an insatiable amount of questions about where the Tigers go from here.
Fielder will almost assuredly bat 5th, providing a massive bodyguard behind Miguel Cabrera, and instantly filling the void left by the recently injured Victor Martinez.
Prince, the son of Tiger legend Cecil Fielder, just so happens to have the same defensive skill set as Cabrera; a moderately skilled 1st baseman. Expect both to split time at 1st and Designated Hitter with a possible position switch in the works for Cabrera, a former 3rd baseman.
Prince is a career .282 hitter with a stout .390 lifetime on-base %. His 7-year career has produced 230 homers and 656 RBI’s. The former mainstay in the middle of the Milwaukee Brewers’ lineup will join a Tigers team that is starving for a World Series title.
Owner Mike Ilitch opened up his bank account and let GM Dave Dombrowski get the 2nd biggest free agent name of the offseason (Albert Pujols). At just 27 years old, Fielder might be the better overall bargain between the two.
Some of the best tweets found on Twitter after the news broke include:
@Phil Coke’s Brain: IS THIS REAL LIFE????
@Mario Impempa: Color me #stunned.
@Jon Morosi: I received confirmation: Prince Fielder to the #Tigers. Can’t believe I typed those words. this is stunning.
@Phil Coke’s Brain: I NEED a CIGARETTE
@Ken Rosenthal: Text from exec: “a good journalist should check if Tonya Harding is a Boras employee and if she was anywhere near VMart in recent weeks
”
@Rod Allen: I guess I can bring back “COUNTRY STRONG” #yeahbuddy
@Bog Nightengale: The #Tigers, #Yankees, and #Phillies now have three players all earning at least $20 million. #MLB
Needless to say, this caught the baseball community off guard. Much like last July when Dombrowski swooped in under cover of darkness and plucked Doug Fister from the Seattle Mariners, Domrowski has quietly executed his game plan once again.
Some solid perspective came via ESPN’s Buster Olney when he tweeted this: Fielder deal came together very quickly: last week, GM Dave Dombrowski said to me flatly DET wasn’t interested in LNG-term Prince deal.
To recap current contracts on the team: Cabrera is signed through 2016 and Victor Martinez through 2014. Fielder is signed through 2020 based on the initial buzz surrounding his new deal.
Tigers.com beat writer Jason Beck tweeted this: Source says #Tigers approached Miguel Cabrera about Prince Fielder move. he was on board with it. So no Hanley comparisons, please.
To that same point, @Jon Morosi tweeeted: Source close to Miguel Cabrera says he was “really excited” to hear news of Prince Fielder agreement. #Tigers
The question of the day is now: what do the Tigers do in 2013 when VMart is back? this is a legitimate question but certainly the issue falls in the category of: these are good problems to have.
Other pressing questions on top of the VMart issue:
@DKNobler tweets this: Expect the Tigers to play Prince every day at 1B, and to move Cabrera to 3B. And don’t be surprised if he’s better there than you think.
