Known as an annular eclipse, the event is the first of its kind to be visible from the mainland United States since 1994. the region won’t see another such eclipse until 2023.

Like a total solar eclipse, an annular eclipse happens when the moon lines up between Earth and the sun. But in this case, the dark moon’s apparent diameter is smaller than the visible disk of the sun, leaving a ring—or annulus—of fiery light around the edges. (See annular eclipse pictures.)

During such an eclipse, “the path of annularity, where the full eclipse will be visible, is hundreds of miles wide and thousands of miles long,” said eclipse expert Jay Pasachoff, the Field Memorial Professor at Williams College in Massachusetts.

In this path, “viewers looking through special solar filters can see a ring of sunlight around the black silhouette of the moon,” said Pasachoff, who is also a National Geographic Society grantee. (National Geographic News is a division of the Society.)

The annular eclipse starts in China at local sunrise on may 21. the path of the moon’s shadow then goes over Japan around 7:35 a.m., local time, and races across the Pacific Ocean.

Due to the time zone change, the eclipse makes landfall again in North America in the late afternoon of may 20, starting at the California-Oregon border at 6:26 p.m. PT.

The annular eclipse then crosses southern Nevada, southern Utah, the Grand Canyon in northern Arizona, the lower-left corner of Colorado, and most of new Mexico before ending in the area of Lubbock, Texas, around sunset at 8:36 p.m. CT.

For most viewers in the path of annularity, the eclipse will last for a just over four and half minutes.

Active Sun to Add Beauty to Eclipse

Some picturesque wilderness areas—including several U.S. national parks—will be in the 190-mile-wide (300-kilometer-wide) path of the full annular eclipse.

Viewers in a broader track stretching for thousands of miles across northeastern Asia and the western two-thirds of the U.S. and Canada will instead see a striking partial eclipse.

“Unlike a total eclipse, in which the sun is entirely covered and the sky therefore gets dark, it never gets dark during an annular eclipse like this one,” Pasachoff said.

“So the only loss in view from being off to the side of the zone of totality is that you won’t see a complete ring and things won’t appear symmetric, but you’ll still be able to see a partial eclipse of the sun.”

The best chances for clear skies during the event will be in states such as Nevada, Arizona, and Utah, added Anthony Cooke, an astronomer at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles.

“But most of the path in the Western U.S. has better than even odds of clear enough weather to observe the eclipse,” he said.

Cooke also predicts some added beauty with this eclipse, since it occurs close to the expected maximum of the current solar cycle in early 2013.

“We can expect interesting moments when sunspots of various sizes will be covered by the advancing limb of the moon, then later uncovered as the moon retreats from the sun’s face,” he said.

To view the eclipse safely, astronomers recommend using either a professionally manufactured solar filter in front of a telescope or camera, or using eclipse viewing glasses that sufficiently reduce the sun’s brightness and filter out damaging ultraviolet and infrared radiation.

But probably the safest and easiest way to take in the eclipse is to use the pinhole projection method, Williams College’s Pasachoff said.

“Punch a one-eighth to one-quarter-inch hole in a piece of cardboard and use it to create a projection of the partial or annular phases on a wall a few feet away,” he said.

Eclipse as a Science Tool

The Griffith Observatory’s Cooke says scientists will probably also be making use of this weekend’s annular eclipse.

“Radio telescopes close to the path of annularity will make observations as the moon passes over sunspots and other sources of radio disturbances on the sun,” he said.

Sunspots are linked to eruptions of intense electromagnetic radiation called solar flares, which can cause disturbances to radio communications on Earth and also hinder radio astronomers’ views of the universe. (Find out more about solar storms in National Geographic magazine.)

“Also,” Cooke said, “precise timing of the onset of annularity can provide data on possible changes in the diameter of the sun when compared with historical measurements.”

For the second consecutive year, the La Costa Canyon High baseball team won the Avocado West League title, beating Oceanside 4-0 on Wednesday at home.

The Mavericks (18-9, 9-3) jumped on the scoreboard early with four runs in the first inning, and that would prove to be enough for senior starter Andrew Hinkle, who scattered seven hits while only walking one batter.

“(Hinkle) has really stepped it up for us this year,” Mavericks coach Justin Machado said. “He pounds the zone. He gets a ton of ground balls. He really has put it all together and stayed consistent all year long.

“He’s got a great presence on the mound.”

Machado said strong pitching and solid defense is why his team was in position to claim the league championship again.

“Every team in this league had a lot of good pitching, and every game we played was well contested,” said Machado. “But our guys went out and competed every time they took the mound, and the defense stood tall behind them, and anytime you do that you have a chance to win.”

Love is not a Feeling. What? you exclaim, of course, love is a feeling. I feel it in my chest, stomach and my body tingles sometimes. Yes, those are the physiological manifestations when one has the sensation of ‘falling in love.’

Falling in love and love are two different phenomena. Falling in love can be either a flash of emotions or a first step towards genuine love. love is misunderstood to be an emotion; it is a state of awareness, a way of being in the world, a way of seeing oneself and others. -David R. Hawkins

Falling in love is a strong instinctive attraction to a person. if it is mutual and both people work at their relationship; one day that euphoric experience called, ‘falling in love,’ can grow into genuine love.

The falling in love phenomena is the call of one’s longing to belong, to cathect, but the object is instinctually chosen according to our ideals, dreams and etc., although one may not realize it. we usually fall in love with the person’s appearance, with the way she/he walks, the way he/she talks. Sometimes we impute to our object of love some mystic illusion, ideal qualities and the more we get to know the person the less we fall for him or her. That’s when the feeling of love disappears even faster than it appeared.

The more two persons get to know each other, the more comfortable they get; the less sharp, bright and exciting the falling in love experience is. some couples continue their relationships and get married; some fall apart. It’s reasonable to say that more clothes in the closet and one more toothbrush in the bathroom is the end of the falling in love phase, but it also can be the beginning of genuine love.

The euphoric feelings we call ‘love’ is the emotion that accompanies the experience of cathecting. Cathecting is the process by which an object becomes important to a person. once cathected, the object, often referred to as a ‘love object’ is invested with our energy as if it were a part of oneself, and this relationship between oneself and the invested object is called a cathexis. One’s cathexis may be fleeting and momentary. Genuine love implies commitment and exercise of wisdom. when one is concerned for someone’s spiritual and emotional growth, one knows that a lack of commitment is likely to be harmful and that commitment to that person is probably necessary for one to manifest one’s concern effectively. The concern and commitment to another’s spiritual and emotional growth is the purest form of love. it is for this reason that commitment is the cornerstone of any healthy relationship-friends, significant others, husband/wife.

Genuine love transcends the matter of cathexis. when love exists it does so with or without cathexis and with or without a loving feeling-those bursts of butterflies in the stomach, body tingling, etc.

It is easier-indeed, it is exhilarating-to love with cathexis and the euphoric feeling of love. however, it is possible to love without cathexis and without loving feelings, and it is in the fulfillment of this possibility that genuine and transcendent love is distinguished from simple cathexis. Genuine love is volitional rather than euphorically emotional. The person who truly loves does so because of ‘a decision to love.’ this person has made a commitment to ‘be loving,’ whether or not the loving feelings are present.

It can be difficult and painful to search for evidence of love in one’s actions, but because true love is an act of will that transcends ephemeral feelings of love or cathexis, it can be said, love is as love does. love and non-love, as good and evil, are objective and not purely subjective phenomena.

The Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow winds its way into the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday, may 30 and brings with it some of the festival’s most highly acclaimed comedians.

Joining the Roadshow, Melbourne-based stand up David Quirk, who is visiting Mandurah for the first time, said the roadshow was a great way for people to see the best that the Melbourne International Comedy Festival had to offer in their own backyard.

‘‘I think people should come out because it’s a good night of comedy,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s some of the best and funniest acts that have been on during the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and I think audiences would be mad to not come.

‘‘Unless there’s something really good on TV, and it’d wanna be really good. And even if it is, just tape it.’’

Quirk has toured Australia and overseas, bringing his slightly dark and unusual style of comedy to audiences across the globe. he was quick to point out his comedy wasn’t the usual ‘‘punchline’’ comedy, but insisted the night would offer something for everyone’s tastes.

‘‘Every audience is different but I think that gives me faith to just keep going from town to town,’’ he said.

‘‘I just hope that people will like what I do, or get a laugh out of what any of us do.

‘‘At the end of the day we’re all just people and I know everyone’s different but at the same time if something’s funny, people will laugh at it.

‘‘And if they don’t laugh at something that’s truly funny then they’re probably a bit strange.’’

David Clarkson has been called lots of things during his NHL career, many of which aren’t suitable for print.

On Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden, the new Jersey Devils forward was asked whether ‘mr. Clutch’ might apply.

“I don’t know about that,” Clarkson said with a grin. “I’m going to stay up and down and finish my checks and (the pucks) just bounce off me, it seems like.

“It’s a great feeling to be able to contribute. (The season) has been a fun ride. with team success, individuals get success.”

Clarkson scored the winning goal in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference final in a 3-2 victory against the new York Rangers, the third time in the post-season Clarkson has provided the difference.

The best-of-seven series is now tied 1-1, with the next two games in the Battle of the Hudson across the river in Newark.

No other Devil has more than one game-winner in the playoffs.

This one came in true Clarkson fashion as he went to net and tipped an Adam Henrique shot behind Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist at 2:31 of the third period. at first glance, it appeared Clarkson’s stick might have been too high, but replays proved otherwise.

Clarkson told reporters before the series started that the Devils would have to get in Lundqvist’s face in order to be successful, but that didn’t happen in Game 1. The Devils were a lot more eager to do that in Game 2, and it was not a coincidence that two goals, including one by Ryan Carter in the second period that tied the game 2-2, came off deflections.

But it wasn’t just going to the net that made the Devils successful. They forechecked with more enthusiasm than they did in the series opener, and it’s from that relentless style that most of their offence originates. because of that, they had more puck control. Shot-blocking was not a significant factor as the Rangers had just 16.

“we did a much better job,” Devils captain Zach Parise said. “we didn’t turn the puck over in the neutral zone. we made their defencemen have to turn and get pucks. we made it hard on them. all in all, we like the way we played.”

The Devils’ vigour wasn’t lost on the Rangers.

“in the corners and along the wall, they were pinching and cycling us pretty good,” Rangers defenceman Marc Staal said. “their forecheck and battles in the corner, they were coming out with more of those than we were. That’s something we can fix and we’re going to.”

Devils coach Peter DeBoer made a lineup change, inserting defenceman Peter Harrold in Adam Larsson’s spot. more importantly, DeBoer had Travis Zajac centre Parise and Kovalchuk on the top line. Kovalchuk was the best player on the ice in the first period, and he scored the only goal in the opening 20 minutes when he fired a shot over the left shoulder of Lundqvist.

Staal and Chris Kreider scored for the Rangers in the second period, giving the home side a brief lead.

Kreider got his name in the NHL record books when Anton Stralman’s shot deflected off the rookie and into the net. it was the fourth playoff goal for Kreider and his sixth point, tying the playoff mark in both categories for players who have not yet played in an NHL regular-season game.

Devils netminder Martin Brodeur shone, making several big stops in a 23-save performance.

“Key saves at key times,” DeBoer said. “You’re on your heels. It’s the third period, they’re giving a push. I thought the third period was his best, and that’s when you need him to be his best.

“Just our overall game was much better. I thought we established our forecheck right off the bat in the first period and we were creating zone time and chances.”

Can He Win The Preakness?

After a promising start to his career in 2011, Liaison has suffered nothing but defeats during 2012. He clipped heels and tossed the jockey in his first race of the year, the G2-Lewis. And then he proceeded to finish behind I’ll have Another, Creative cause and Bodemeister in his next three races. All of those colts have continued to develop this spring while Liaison’s best form appears to be behind him.

If Liaison is to have any chance at victory in the Preakness, he’s going to have to get out of the gate much cleaner than he has in his recent starts. his best races occur when he’s able to sit a length or two off of the pace, as opposed to being shuffled towards the middle of the pack.

It’s tough to see Liaison as a likely winner in the Preakness but he might be able to sneak into the top four if he’s able to get a clean trip around the track.

The Preakness Stakes, along with the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes, is the second race of the coveted Thoroughbred Triple Crown. the race is often referred to as the run for the Black Eyed Susan’s. This is because the winner of the race will be draped with flower wreath of Black Eyed Susan’s. the race is always run on the third Saturday in May at the historical Pimlico race course in Baltimore Maryland. the race is open to both fillies and colts; however, the fillies will usually compete in the Triple Crown races that are not open to the colts. Fillies that do choose to run in the race will be required to carry a weight of 121 pounds, while the colts will have to carry 126 pounds.

The Preakness Stakes will almost always attract the winner of the Kentucky Derby because that is the only horse that will be able to win the Triple Crown. There will often be some of the other horses that were entered in the Kentucky Derby, along with a few horses that did not run in the Kentucky Derby. the Preakness Stakes is the shortest of the three Triple Crown races at a length of nine furlongs. the Kentucky Derby is ten furlongs, while the Belmont is the longest of the three races at twelve furlongs.

The Preakness Stakes was first run in 1873 and is named after a Thoroughbred race horse named Preakness. This horse won the Dinner Party Stakes on October 25, 1870, which was the day that Pimlico race course opened. the former Governor of Maryland named the race in honor of the colt.

The first Preakness Stakes that was held in 1873 only had seven starters; however, the horse that won the race, Survivor, set a record that would stand until the year of 2004. the record that Survivor set was the largest margin of victory, which was ten lengths. This record was broken in 2004 by Smarty Jones when he won the race by eleven lengths.

One of the oldest traditions surrounding the Preakness Stakes is the changing of the colors on the weather vane at the top of the cupola in the infield. as soon as the results of the race are official, a painter will apply the colors of silks of the winning jockey to the jockey atop the weather vane, were they will remain until the next year’s winner of the Preakness Stakes is crowned.

A juror in the Roger Clemens perjury trial was dismissed Wednesday for repeatedly showing up late and sleeping during testimony.

The unemployed 27-year-old was selected despite telling attorneys he would rather stay in bed than sit through the former baseball star’s trial, the Houston Chronicle reported.

The unidentified juror subsequently vowed to remain “wide awake” but US District Judge Reggie Walton booted him from the panel after he failed to do so.

Walton, however, did have a little sympathy for jurors, indicating Tuesday he was becoming disturbed by the snail’s pace of proceedings, noting jurors were beginning to look “bored” and urging attorneys to speed things up.

The trial, in which government prosecutors are once more trying to prove Clemens lied to Congress in 2008 about his alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs, resumed Wednesday minus the sleepy juror.

Clemens, 49, has steadfastly denied using performance-enhancing drugs. If convicted on all charges, he could face 15 to 21 months in prison.

Larry Bird is quitting, taking his ball and going home.

OK, maybe he’s not. He’s said no decision has been made yet about whether he’ll remain as president of the Indiana Pacers, contrary to some reports. but how else to get anyone to pay attention to this team?

The Pacers are the unidentified object just beginning to show up on the radar screen of the NBA playoffs.

They’re the team most likely to need name tags. They owned the fifth best record in the league during the season — better than the Boston Celtics or the Los Angeles Lakers— but who knew? That apparently included the local customers, as the Pacers finished 29th in the NBA in attendance, behind even the Charlotte Bobcats, who went 7-59.

And they might be the team to give the Miami Heat the most anxious moments in the Eastern Conference. probably find that out the next round.

“I think we’re a little lost under the radar,” Danny Granger was saying Tuesday after the Pacers finished off the Orlando Magic in five games, Indiana’s first playoff advancement in seven years. “That’s fine with us. If you’re lost under the radar, you can sneak up on people a little easier.”

The Bankers Life Fieldhouse crowd was chanting “Beat the Heat.” lately, anyone around here saying that in may was trying to market air conditioners for the summer.

Trouble selling basketball in Indiana? Isn’t that a little like trouble selling zebras to lions?

But the big problems are fading for this franchise. Lousy records. Off-court transgressions by former players. Peyton Manning and the Colts owning the city.

The new wave behaves itself, and Manning is now a Denver Bronco. might be some cap space in the Indianapolis attention span for its basketball team. “I think with Peyton leaving, it’s definitely helped us a little bit,” swingman Paul George said.

The Pacers seem to take lack of national recognition with grace, figuring the future can fix anything. “I guess we have to prove ourselves,” George said.

“I don’t know if that means a whole lot to us,” said forward David West, an important addition. “other than we’re trying to go about it the best possible way. this group is young, but we’re hungry. We’ve got good character guys.”

“You’ll get credit when you have success,” guard George Hill added.

Pushing Miami, for instance.

“We feel like this is just the beginning of a big run,” coach Frank Vogel said. “We know a team can beat any crew of superstars. We preach team play. We watched what the Dallas Mavericks did in the playoffs last year.”

You’ve been warned, Heat. Once you shake off the New York Knicks, you’re about to be Mavericked. If only the Pacers had Dirk Nowitzki.

The playoffs here have played to full houses, and while that shouldn’t be noteworthy in Indiana, it is. the natives had grown a little restless — or even worse, disinterested — with the pace of Bird’s promised revival four years ago. and had he not been a cherished state treasure, he would have been more of a target.

There is some thought he’s ready to step down, now that the turnaround is clear. Or might he want to stay a tad longer to see where it all goes? Bird isn’t saying yet.

What he did say, standing in the fieldhouse hallway the other day, is how much he wanted to see the end of sections of empty seats at Pacers games.

“our players knew they weren’t showing up,” Bird said. “To bring high quality players here — they ask a lot of questions. They see it on TV. it helps when you have big crowds for a lot of reasons. First thing most of these guys do is look up there and see how many people are here tonight.

“I understand we’re coming out of a recession and it is not cheap to come to one of our games. I grew up poor. my goal four years ago was to change the culture, and bring in guys I like to watch play. I know if I like to watch them, our fans will like to watch them. It’s been a slow process.”

It seems to be working. Don’t worry if you have noticed yet. Lots of people haven’t.
